Every time you decide to participate in a dance competition you get to dress up, move your body, enjoy some well-deserved attention as you dance. As you prepare to sail around the dance floor, the competition motivates you to take your dancing to the next level. When you step onto the dance floor for the first time, it is crowded with other awesome dancers, and they all have a love of dancing in common with you.
Dancing at a competition can be an exciting experience to look forward to during all the weeks before the competition. While the judging results will vary with each competition, whenever you step onto the dance floor in that glittering dress or those well-tailored pants to glow slightly orange beneath the shining lights, you have won part of the prize of competing already.
We wish all of our competitors well this weekend. We are excited to cheer you on at the Texas Dancesport Jam.
We also congratulate April on her success in winning the top counselor award last weekend. Go Arthur Murray Cypress!

This year we are celebrating 100 years of Arthur Murray Dance Studios, and looking at an ad published in the January 1922 edition of the Science and Invention magazine, it is clear that things have progressed over the years. For better or for worse, the demand for faddish dances like the One Step or the College Rock has faded. Fashions have changed; mannerisms of speech and writing have shifted to adapt to changing communication styles; the cost of postage has increased.
Some things remain the same, though. We are still teaching “the newest steps.” And both the newest and most experienced dancers continue to be “amazed” as they have the time of their lives gaining a new skill. So why not? you, too, can still “enjoy the pleasures and popularity of a real good dancer.” All you have to do is walk in the door.

Congratulations Team Houston for making a fantastic showing last weekend at Team Match in Austin. Although Team SAustin stole our trophy, we did not leave empty-handed. Team Purple came home the winner in the Newcomer Division and also the Silver & Advanced Divison. So thank you to all you first-timers who danced your tushes off, and to our more experienced dancers who took it to the next level!
It was heard Saturday morning while everyone was arriving to board the bus, “I feel like I’m attending a Barney the Dinosaur convention!” But all that purple apparel paid off because there was no doubt we were NOT leaving without the Team Spirit Award. We chanted; we cheered, and even cha cha cha’d on the sidelines to support our team, which made this Team Match one of the most exciting in recent years!
If you thought last Saturday’s match was fun, just wait for a full day of dancing, dining, friends, and performances by world renowned dancers, Liana Churilova and Emmanuel Pierre-Antoine at our upcoming Texas Dancesport Jam, Saturday, October 20, 2012. Make sure you get signed up today. See you there!

Do you remember when you first thought about dancing? You probably went to a club and got tired of “bouncing” to the music. Then, maybe you went to a bar and got run over trying to figure out what to actually do with your feet. So, you opened the local magazine, or typed “dance” in Google, or you just have a wonderful friend who has shared with you their exciting time at Arthur Murray Dance Studio. Then you took a deep breath, turned that door handle, and discovered your new passion alongside your whole new family!
Before that, though, you’re sitting at a table looking at the dance floor, trying to figure out which dances to check off on the paper you were given. You can’t even fathom the idea that one day you will finally get the Forward Change Steps in Waltz. Or the Tango Rocks. Or Foxtrot really is fun. Or the idea that you can be sexy in Cha Cha. Or your favorite is going to be Rumba. Or Polka isn’t exclusively German. Or Salsa is not as hard as you think.
Disco is not quite dead because you can Hustle the night away.
Brazil had it right with the Samba.
Okay, the Merengue isn’t the MOST exciting, but it makes a good conga line.
You will realize that the most versatile dances are something in the Swing category.
If you plan on visiting your favorite country bar anytime soon you will need every bit of 2-Step you can get.
Your new dream one day will be to dance a Viennese Waltz in the Hofburg Palace on New Year’s Eve.
Bolero makes you hurt the next morning, but you will still take whole lessons on “hand, rib, hips, release, foot, turn, place.”
Many people remember some of these feelings well, and even more will realize them soon, but the one thing that everyone has in common is that we all started at the same place, walking through the Arthur Murray doors
